The CIMC-Gemdale Meilan City project is located in the core area of the Luodian residential area of Meilan Lake in Baoshan District, Shanghai. It is one of the few remaining large-scale TOD commercial and office complex development projects within Shanghai’s jurisdiction. Adjacent to Meilan Lake Station on Line 7, the project has a total construction area of approximately 410,000 square meters, of which approximately 135,000 square meters are commercial space.
Because the project site is divided into four plots by municipal roads, it was difficult to create a distinctive urban image through the design of a single building. After extensive analysis, research, and feasibility studies, we combined the geometric characteristics of the “self-completeness” of a circle to spatially “stitch together” the four plots in the planning.
We integrated the space through a powerful circular terraced plaza, with a large platform acting as an artificial ground level to smoothly guide subway pedestrian flow into the second and third floors of the shopping mall. This enhances the commercial value of the upper levels while strengthening the connection between the first, second, and third-floor platforms, further stimulating pedestrian flow across all levels.
